I am a historian of early modern and modern Europe, specialising in Italy, the papacy, and the Catholic Church. My research explores the political and institutional cultures of Catholicism, its development as a global religious and cultural phenomenon, and the histories of gender and sexuality. Key recent publications include ‘Priests and their Wigs in Eighteenth-Century Rome’, Church History: Studies in Christianity and Culture 93 (2024), pp. 272–91, and ‘The cult of gay relics and queer medievalism in 1980s Sydney’, Past & Present: A Journal of Historical Studies 269 (2025), pp. 277–324 (with Michael D. Barbezat).
