I am an Associate Member at the Faculty of History. I specialise in Elizabethan and early Stuart maritime, religious, and Anglo-Spanish history, with particular attention to Catholic identities, English seafarers, privateering, exile, foreign sailors, and cross-confessional networks between England, Spain, and the wider Iberian world. My monograph, Catholicism and Elizabethan Seafaring: Catholic Identities between England and Spain, was published by Liverpool University Press as a British Academy Global Monograph in 2026. I am also currently completing a further monograph, Catholic Exiles at Sea in the Anglo-Spanish War (1585–1604): British and Irish Sailors in the Iberian World, under contract with Boydell & Brewer and Durham University’s IMEMS Press.
My articles in British Catholic History (Cambridge University Press) and the Journal of Early Modern Christianity (De Gruyter) examine Catholic seamen, priests, and maritime networks. I also explore foreign sailors aboard Elizabethan ships (funded by NIAS), while a separate project funded by the Economic History Society investigates the wages of English, Scottish, and Irish sailors in sixteenth-century Spain.
